Skpye Call With a Class in Grosse Ile, QC

On October 21st we skyped with a class in Grosse Ile, QC. You might wonder what “skype” is. Well, it is a way to communicate by video on a computer with anyone in the world for free. You can instant message or video chat with them. With the help of an LCD projector we were able to see and speak to a class of 5 -7 year olds. We used Google Earth to locate where Grosse Ile was. We found that it was a small island off the coast of Gaspe. We thought of some great questions to ask. We wondered since they lived on an island if they had boats. We wondered if the boats had names. What did the Dads do? What did the children like to do? How did they get home from school. We have a lot of buses that pick us up every day. We have close to 1,000 students. We found out that they only have 69 students in grades Kindergarten to Sec. 5. They have one bus that takes kids home. Most kids live close enough to walk to school. We learned that most of the Dads are fishermen who catch lobster. All the boats have names. We loved skyping with Grosse Ile and look forward to talking to them again. We are both planning to make an ABC book of our school and/or community and will share that when it is complete.

The skype call to Oregon was special, cool,different, super, fun, interesting, exciting, and amazing. We liked when they showed us their chrysalis’. It was interesting to see that their chrysalis looked like ours. It was amazing that they lived far away from us and we could see and talk to them.We learned that you could raise chickens in the classroom. It was fun to teach them french words like papillon, chenille and poulet. We found that lots of children in Oregon have seen leatherback turtles. It was fun to find out that they have lots of webkinz, too. Just like us. We loved that they sang to us. We sang to them, too and they want to have a copy of our Butterfly song. It was cool that everyone in their class had a chrysalis on their desk. We only have 14. Finally, we thought it was interesting that they could speak other languages, like Spanish and Chinese. Thank you Oregon friends. We had fun. We want to do it again.
