We have been reading Maurice Sendak’s classic story “Where the Wild Things Are” in class. We have enough books so that each student can have a copy in front to them. On Wednesday afternoons our 4th grade Reading Buddies come to our class. Last week we read the story together and then wrote down important words from the story. I collected all these words and typed them on a word document. Then I copied and pasted these words on a wordle .
The picture above shows what we created. Try making your own wordle. Laura says she has tried making one at home.
Come back to our blog later to see our “Wild Things”. We each made a wild thing. We are all excited to go see the movie. It starts today. I think I will have to wait until next weekend to see it. I can’t wait.

Grade One has been busy designing book covers for some unfamiliar stories. I read aloud Abuella by Arthur Dorros the other day. The pictures are by Elissa Kleven. I had the cover of the book blocked with a piece of construction paper so that the children could design their own book cover. This is a story about a little girl named Rosalba who is always “going places” with her grandmother who she calls Abuella. This is Spanish for Grandmother. It is a multicultural story with Spanish words and phrases weaved into the English text. During one of their bird feeding outings to the park Rosalba wonders aloud “What if I could fly”? Thus begins an excursion in the child’s imagagination as they fly high above the busses and tall buildings in Manhattan in New York City. Each stop reveals memories from Abuella’s ethnic past. The illustrations are just beautiful. If you are looking for multicultural stories check out Abuella.

Maybe next year in grade two we could reread this story and then make up our own version using Montreal landmarks and French words mixed in with English words. What do you think first graders???

The Very Cranky Bear

by Nick Bland

A zebra, a lion, a moose and a sheep want to play in the den of a bear. The bear woke up and roared at them to get out. The bear was very cranky. It made us think about how cranky we get when we are tired. We liked it when the animals dressed up the bear. The bear was even more cranky because he needed to sleep. Read the story to find out what the sheep does. She is very thoughtful but it is funny what she does. Kids who like animals and funny books will like this story.

My foot is doing better. I am taking good care of myself. I want to share a cool reading website I found with you. I think you will like it. Watch my video and you will see what you can do. This is my first try at doing a screencast. A screencast is just a video of my computer screen. Click on the link below (2009-04-06) to watch my screencast. To go to the actual pbs kids website click Between the Lions website here. I also have a link to it on the right sidebar under “Links”.

I am learning new things while I am at home. What did you think of my screencast? What do you think of this website?
