Holiday Greeting Card Project

Our class is participating in a project with 24 other schools to create and send Holiday Greeting Cards. We found the project online on “Projects by Jen”. On Thursday, we looked at some of my old cards and identified key features of a greeting card. There is a picture on the front, a greeting message inside and then a personal message and a salutation. Each student created a card, decided on a greeting and included a personal message in their card. We also brainstormed a message together that would explain about us and a little about our community. We put this on the back of each card.

We hope our new friends will enjoy our cards. Everyone worked hard on them and had fun.

Introducing Our Class Mascot, Jake

I’d like to introduce the newest member to our classroom. His name is Jake and he is a chocolate lab. We will take turns taking him home and playing with him. He will come home in a bag with a “Martha Speaks” story and an information book about dogs. Who knows maybe he is a dog like Martha and will speak to you at your house. Also included in the bag is a tangram game that you can play with Jake. Finally, there is a journal for you to write about what you did with Jake. I know Jake can’t wait to come to your house.

Build Your Wild Self

Where the Wild Things movie has been out for a few weeks now. Many of us saw the movie and give it a “thumbs up” review. We were busy in class last term with making our own wild things and describing them. I found this site that I would like to share with you. You can “Build Your Wild Self” at home on this site.

Martha Speaks

Do you watch PBS Kids? This is a public television channel that has lots of great shows for kids. It is a great channel for all my students to tune into to help them with their English. One new addition to their programming is Martha Speaks. I fell in love with Susan Meddaugh stories a few years ago and have a collection. Martha is a talking dog and has many adventures with her ability to speak. Check out the Martha Speaks site on the internet. There are videos and games to play.

We had a fun “Halloween” day at school on Friday. Everyone was dressed in very creative costumes. Here is a picture of the delicious cake sent in by Hunter’s family and of everyone in their costume. The cake was delicious.

Watch our movie and listen to the children explain what we saw and did on the farm. Thanks to Sonia for teaching us about the farm animals. A special thank you goes to the parents who came with us and braved the cold weather.

Counting Pumpkin Seeds

We had a fun math class today counting pumpkin seeds. Yesterday we opened up 3 pumpkins – a large one, a medium sized one and a small one. We stuck our hands in and pulled out all the seeds. We put the seeds into 3 bags. I took them home, cleaned them and toasted them in the oven so that they would be easier to count. So today we started with the seeds from the large pumpkin. I gave each student a pile and we put them in groups of 10. We decided we would count these seeds by 10s. After all the seeds were distributed we counted by 10s and the seeds totaled 440. We decided to count the medium sized pumpkin by 5s. This was more of a challenge. Again, I gave each student a pile of seeds to put into groups of 5. To count by 5 I put tally marks on the chalkboard. We counted 480 seeds. We sure had a lot of tally marks on the board. See some pictures below. Sorry but even though I had my camera ready on my desk today I totally forgot to take photos of all our amazing counting.

The Last Days of School

Yesterday was our last day of first grade. In the morning we played board games with our friends. In the afternoon we had an Ice Cream Sundae party. Thanks to all the parents who came and helped us. Also, a big thanks to everyone who contributed sundae toppings. I had the best sundae ever…. oreo cookies, peanut butter cups, strawberries and chocolate sauce on top of vanilla ice cream. Yum!

Monday was Beach Day. All of Cycle One participated. Kindergarten, First and Second grade were out on the field all morning. There were 20 stations, 4 snack stations and a photo station. Children has punch out card around their neck and could chose which station they wanted to do. They could only do a station once. Everyone had a fabulous time even if it was a bit chilly. Watch the video and see some of the activities of Beach Day and our last day of school. Thanks to Ms. Mohammed for all her planning and ideas. You are amazing.

Grade One Wordle

Grade One brainstormed favorite things about our year with a partner. I collected the papers and typed all the responses on an appleworks document. Then I copied and pasted them to a website called wordle. The words that appear larger were more frequently listed as favorite things about grade one.
