The Butterflies Are Free

We let the butterflies go free this morning. We sang them their song one last time. It was a windy day and it seemed that with one rush of wind they all flew out of the tank at once. One landed on “Beach Boy’s” back for awhile. During lunch someone found a tiny caterpillar outside. Did one of our butterflies lay an egg? Not one of ours but maybe another class let their butterflies go free earlier in the week. Some of us are sure it is a painted lady caterpillar.

The Butterfly Day

We felt happy when we came to school and we saw some butterflies. We saw one butterfly hanging from its chrysalis. We saw one dying because it was stuck to the floor of the tank. Its wing was stuck in some sticky blood. Almost all the butterflies were out of their chrysalis. Only 4 more to go. We saw some butterflies flying, fluttering and flapping their wings. We noticed that when the butterly was still its wings were closed.

The skype call to Oregon was special, cool,different, super, fun, interesting, exciting, and amazing. We liked when they showed us their chrysalis’. It was interesting to see that their chrysalis looked like ours. It was amazing that they lived far away from us and we could see and talk to them.We learned that you could raise chickens in the classroom. It was fun to teach them french words like papillon, chenille and poulet. We found that lots of children in Oregon have seen leatherback turtles. It was fun to find out that they have lots of webkinz, too. Just like us. We loved that they sang to us. We sang to them, too and they want to have a copy of our Butterfly song. It was cool that everyone in their class had a chrysalis on their desk. We only have 14. Finally, we thought it was interesting that they could speak other languages, like Spanish and Chinese. Thank you Oregon friends. We had fun. We want to do it again.

It was a fun morning taking the pupas out of their cups and taping them to the sides of our fish tank. Some of us took pictures with Mrs. Lynch’s camera.

The Caterpillars Have Arrived

The caterpillars arrived on Thursday. We have 16 of them and they are presently in little plastic cups with lids. They have food in each of these cups. The largest caterpillar is about 2 cm long. All the cups are sitting in the aquarium in our classroom. Feel free to stop by and see them. I haven’t taken a picture yet but will add one next week.
