Painting with Claude Monet’s inspiration

May 4, 2012 · 14 Comments · Uncategorized

Grade 2 was really lucky to have Lydia’s Mom come in on Wednesday to help us with our paintings. We have been learning about artists and different styles of paintings. We wanted to try doing a landscape and and chose Claude Monet as our inspiration. Lydia’s Mom is an artist herself. She brought in one of her paintings to show us. She also brought in her easel. The students each had an 8×10 canvas to work on. We made them miniature palettes with cardboard and waxed paper. We used acrylic paint.

The picture above is Lydia’s Moms’ finished painting of Claude Monet’s Poppy Field.  She showed us step by step how to paint it.

Before we started we gave our canvas’ a yellow wash, watered down yellow. That was in case we missed painting any of our canvas. Instead of a bright white showing you would just see a pale yellow. Evangeline (Lydia’s Mom) gave us step by step instructions on how to proceed. First we used a pencil to draw in the horizon line, the mountain in the background and the trees.  We made our pencil lines light.  We needed to start with the furthest thing in the picture. Andy said, “the sky”. Evangeline explained that we needed to just pick up a small amount of white and blue and dab the paint on the canvas… we said “dab, dab, dab” a lot. It was so much fun to paint like Monet. Monet was an impressionist painter.  He used small brush strokes and would pick up color from his palette and dab it onto the canvas, mixing the colors on the canvas itself.   After the sky and clouds the next closest object was the mountain.  After painting the mountains we painted the trees.  Then we came down and made a few bushes at the horizon line.  Finally we painted the poppies.  Watch the video below to see us paint and also see our finished paintings.

We followed Lydia’s Moms’ step by step instructions.  Her finished painting of Claude Monet’s poppy field is above.

Thanks so much for the Moms who came in to help – Lia’s Mom, Julie, Talyssa Rose’s Mom, Dominique and Etienne’s Mom Noemie. Thanks to Evangeline, too. You were awesome.

      Dear AA,
I have missed you. We have been so busy with end of cycle exams that I haven’t been able to post on our blog. I was so happy to see your comment. I must admit that sometimes I wonder if I should discontinue blogging as it does take a lot of time and effort. But then I think of you and other bloggers that I have met in my ” blogging journey” and realize that I must keep going! I feel part of a community and do not want to leave it. Thanks so much for being part of our class and our learning.

    @ Mrs Lynch,

Thank you for your wonderful reply back to me as I really do appreciate it so much. :) I do know what you mean as BB finds it difficult at times too. For she too doesn’t want to let anyone down.

Now I can truly tell you Mrs Lynch our friendship will still continue without blogging if and when you do decided to stop. But I really hope you don’t as I love visiting your blog. You really are an awesome teacher/friend and I love learning with you and the children. :)

    Now take care.

    Dear Mrs Lynch and Class,
I just love your paintings they look awesome.

In Art all the Grade 4′s are learning about Kandinsky a famous artist. In art we made these kind of trees with out paint Paper, which were cut out circles. We them pasted the circles on coloured paper to form a tree.

I just love art it is my favourite subject.

    From your pal,
    BB.

PS The top photos are the kandinsky trees.

      Dear Bianca,
I love Art too! I especially like looking at famous paintings and letting them inspire me to do my own. I like your idea of making Kandinsky trees. I will have to try that some time.

      Dear Bianca,
Thanks so much for sharing this link with us. I had never seen Kandinsky’s trees. We did his concentric circles in Art Class last month. What a great way to make trees. They are beautiful!

It was great fun to work with all of you students, parents and teacher. I was very happy to see how well the students learned to mix their own colors to make new shades of blue and also many different shades of green. They are eager to learn and try, that is wonderful.

    Till next time, Lydia’s Mom

Dear Mrs. Lynch, I forgot to say thank you so much for for all the effort you put in this blog. I loved looking at all the pictures of the children painting. It also allows family members like my grandmother, Lydia’a great grandmother to see what she is doing in classe.

Keep up your wonderful work. We apreciate it. Lydia’s Mom

    Dear Evangeline,
Thanks so much for both of your comments. We really loved having you come in our class as a “guest artist” and teach us about the painting technique that “impressionist” painters used. All the children loved their paintings and can’t wait to take them home.

I also appreciated that you said you liked the blog so you and your family can see what we do in class. I was happy to hear that.

I hope you have a great Mother’s Day weekend.

    Mrs. Lynch
