Reading Week

March 2, 2012 · 13 Comments · Uncategorized

This past week our school celebrated a Reading Week. We started off on Monday paired up with another class for “buddy reading”. Our class was paired with a 6th grade class that had helped us with a project last year. One of our students’ older sister was in this class so that made it even more fun. Each day this week from 10:30 – 10:45 our Vice Principal came on the intercom to announce that is was D.E.A.R. time. That stands for Drop Everything and Read. It was awesome because in our class we do a Read to Self so we knew what to do. You could hear a pin drop in the classroom. Everyone was reading. Yeah!

On Wednesday we dressed up as our favorite character. See the Photopeach slideshow below to see some of our favorite characters. Not everyone dressed up. I was Amelia Bedelia. Also on Wednesday, Lia’s Mom came in to read us a story. It was guest reading day. Thanks! We loved the stories that you chose.

Yesterday we made bookmarks to exchange. Today there will be an assembly and two students from each class will receive a reading prize. It was hard to choose two students from my class as I think everyone is doing awesome with their reading. However, I chose Olivier and Ariane. Congratulations to both of you. I am off on Fridays so won’t see them receive their prize.

A big thanks to all the committee that planned this Reading Week. It was a lot of fun and a big success.

    Dear Mrs Lynch and class,

What a great initiative from our school. All those characters were amazing, I really enjoyed looking at you all. I just wish we could have seen the picture of Amelia Bedelia.
Thanks very much for giving us the opportunity to see this. Thanks also to Lia’s mom for being the guest reader.

      HI Eric,
I am looking forward to hearing all about your ski vacation next week from your son. Michel and I had 2 awesome days of skiing at Wildcat Mountain outside North Conway in New Hampshire. The conditions were perfect and no lift lines. We would like to go back there.

Thanks for your comment on Reading Week. Ha ha on wanting to see Amelia Bedelia. I need to perfect that costume more.

    Dear Mrs Lynch and children,

WOW what a awesome post I just loved reading and watching your wonderful slideshow of you all dressed up in your favourite characters.

I must say you all did a great job dressing up that you all really looked like your favourite characters.

When I was school we really only did week reading about every month. If we wanted to read we would have to go to the school library.

I think that is great the Lia’s mum came in the classroom to read you all a story. I did read that she did a great job. :)

Well done everyone on what sounds like an awesome week of reading week.
    Keep up the great work.

Enjoy your week off too Mrs Lynch and children.

      Dear AA,
I had a great week off from school. We had lots of fun skiing and spent this morning putting away our ski clothes. I think our skiing is finished for this year.

The snow is melting and it is supposed to get warmer this week. I wonder what your weather is like?

Hope you are enjoying your weekend.

    Dear Mrs Lynch and children,
I love your Photo Peach Mrs Lynch it was awesome.

In Grade 2 we had a whole day of reading which was really fun. At school after recess we get a book and we do Independent Reading which means we read for half an hour. After Independent reading we have to look for Nouns, Adjectives and Proper Nouns.

You all look great how you got dressed up in your favourite characters. Great Job!

    From your pal,
    BB.

      Dear Bianca,
Hello and how are you? How is grade 4 going? I wonder how many students you have in your class?
Are you with one teacher or do your teachers team teach? What are you learning about now?

I had a great one week school break. I had a chance to do some great skiing with Michel. I took a few lessons earlier in the winter and I think my technique improved some. It was lots of fun.

Now I am trying to get my school work organized to go back on Monday. I am looking forward to hearing about everyone’s holiday. I think we will do some sharing and then write about it.

      bye for now…
      from your pal,
      Mrs. Lynch

        Dear Mrs Lynch,
Thank you for writing back to me and my comment.

Grade 4 is awesome. I really like my teacher he is very funny. Mr Renkin has his own class blog you might like to check. Here is the link.

        http://mrrenkin24.global2.vic.edu.au/

In 4PR we have 26 students in our class which is the right amount.

Well we only have Mr Renkin as our teacher. :)

Everyday after lunch we have Integrated studies which means we learn about different things also we are learning about our Country Australia. In maths we are also learning about decimals and place value.

I hope you had a wonderful holiday including your childrens.

        From your pal,
        BB.

Hi Mrs Lynch and Room 102,
Your reading week looked like a lot of fun – and we were celebrating reading in the UK too, with World Book Day on 1st March. Class 2 came into school dressed as book characters, and everyone had to give 3 clues as to who they were… we had lots of fun guessing each other’s characters! You can see some of our costumes and clues on our blog this week.
We also did a reading exchange and shared picture books with the other classes in the school, which we really enjoyed – just like you, we love getting together with other children in different classes.
Well done Room 102 for getting into character – and I agree it would have been good to see Mrs Lynch there on your slideshow!

Dear Mrs. M and A Room With a View,
It is great that we celebrated Reading week almost at the same time. It was really fun to dress up as story characters. Your class did a great job dressing up as story characters, too. I enjoyed your slideshow.
Do you have a winter break like we do? It was nice to get away last week and go skiing.

    Dear Mrs. Lynch’s class,

Your reading week sounds exciting! We celebrate March is Reading Month. That means we have activities to celebrate reading all month. We also use DEAR time in our class. We love to read! Our theme this month is a Hawaiian luau. We have a huge mural in the hallway that shows pictures of all our teachers surfing. They surf farther towards shore when we read more books. Our school goal is to read 6,000 books this month. That’s a lot of reading, but we can do it! Tomorrow we are having a Hawaiian shirt day. Today is read a shirt day.

Your book character costumes looked amazing! We love this idea. We liked the Little Red Hen’s oven mitts. Mrs. Moore smiled when she saw Fancy Nancy because that is her daughter’s favorite character.

Thanks for sharing about your reading week!

    Sincerely,
Mrs. Moore and the Techie Kids

    Dear Mrs. Moore,
I like your Hawaiian Luau theme for Reading Month. That is a place I’d like to visit some day.
I had the chance to learn how to surf when I was younger as I lived in San Diego when I started high school. I didn’t take the opportunity to learn though and just body surfed.

It was great to hear from you. We had a “Read my shirt” day too. We still remember skyping with you last year.

    from,
    your friends in Quebec

    • Mrs. Moore

Dear Mrs. Lynch and Room 102,

Wow! We can’t believe that you know how to body surf. We think that’s pretty cool! Luke has gone surfing before. He was in Florida and took surfing lessons. His grandma and grandpa bought him a surfboard. He went surfing at the beach on the Atlantic Ocean.

Angelina’s favorite shirt for Read-A-Shirt Day said Peace. Brooke liked a shirt that said, I love New York. Can you tell us what some of your shirts said?

Mrs. Moore remembers skyping with all of you too! That was very fun. This year’s Techie Kids would love the chance to Skype with you again. This 2nd grade class has never skyped at school before. About 9 of us have had the chance to Skype with someone in their family at home.

      Sincerely,
Mrs. Moore and the Techie Kids

  • teacher102

    Dear Room with a View,
Thanks for you reply and great questions. That is great that Luke took some surfing lessons. I bet it is like riding a bike. Once you get the hang of surfing you can always pick it back up.
I wish I had taken photos of “Read a shirt Day” because I can’t remember any of the sayings that I liked. Cassandra made her own tshirt though of Martha from the Susan Meddaugh books. She had a speech bubble of Martha saying something. I thought that was very creative.
We skyped last week with my sister’s grade 2 class in Acton, Massachusetts and it worked! We could do it with you again! I was just thrilled that it worked.
We haven’t tried to skyped with parents at home.
