Our Own Folk Tales

February 18, 2012 · 6 Comments · Uncategorized

Grade two wrote their own folk tales a few weeks ago.  They wrote a rough draft which I made a few editing corrections and then they recopied their best copy.  They also made a cover/title page. This was our first piece that we edited and made a finsished copy. When we do this again we will ask our friends to help up make our story even better. Students did share their stories with friends and practiced reading them.

As I mentioned a month ago we identified the key elements of a folk tale.

Elements of a Folk Tale

They were told and retold by word of mouth (oral tradition)
They usually begin with “Once upon a time” or Long, long ago.
Many folk tales have animals who take on human characteristics.
They have repetition in them.
There is a problem and a resolution.

The title page needed to have a big title and author and a colorful picture that represented their story.  Students needed to outline in black their picture.

As you can see in our videos below students were able to use these key features in their stories. I am so proud of my second graders. Everyone produced a story and a title page. Here are the first 9 out of 19 stories.

What do you think?

    Dear Mrs Lynch and children,

Wow what an awesome job you all did reading your very own folk tales.
I loved how you all used your imagination and read which such confidence.
    Bravo Bravo!

I hope you all keep on writing different stories because you all have a talent.
    I don’t think I could write a folk story.
But if I do I will send it to you and you all can tell me what you think

Yes Mrs Lynch I am as proud as you are with your wonderful bright children. :)

From your number one fan down under,

    Hi AA,
It is so nice to hear from you. I agree with what you said about the “confidence” in my student’s voices. They are all becoming such confident readers. And they all have such great imaginations. Thanks for being such a great support of our learning. We are so lucky to have you as a friend.

      Hi Bianca,
I love your comment and how you encourage and compliment the second graders. Thank you. I think you have started 4th grade. How is it? What are you learning about? How was your summer holiday? We are going on a week break in two weeks. I plan to do some skiing. I hope we have snow!

    Hello,
What a fantastic job you did with your fairy tales! You are so confident reading them also.
What is the weather like where you are at? Is it snowing?
What else are you learning about?

      Hi Mrs. Todd and class,
Thanks for your comment. We had a snowstorm yesterday and we have lots of new sticky snow on the ground. It is the kind of snow that is great to make a snowman. We are learning about compound words. Snowstorm and snowman are compound words. We are also learning about artists and art appreciation. We are looking at pieces of art and writing about the colors, lines, textures that an artist uses. We will visit an art museum in March. Thanks for listening to our stories.

      Mrs. Lynch
