The Little Red Hen and La Petite Poule Rousse

June 15, 2011 · 12 Comments · Uncategorized

We have been reading The Little Red Hen on ABRA and found out that we could read the same story on ePearl in French. A few weeks ago I set up the computer and projector for the French teacher, Madame Arsenault and the class read La Petite Poule Rousse. It was a big success. I was really impressed with how so many of the children could read it in French. Just like on the English version if you need help with sounding out a word or with pronunciation you can click on a word and “Julie” will help you sound out the word. You can also click on the speaker and the whole text will be read aloud.

Each child in grade one has recorded themselves reading aloud this story (and other stories) in English on their ePearl page. Parents can go on their child’s digital portfolio, listen to their child read and leave them an encouraging comment. These portfolios will follow the children as move up in grades in our school or school board.

Dear Mrs Lynch and your wonderful reading students,

What a wonderful video you reading not only in English but in French. I am so impressed with the way you read this story with great confidence in both English and French. WoW!

You have all given my some thought that I should learn French once again as I did learn some French when I was in High School.

Great work Mrs Lynch I really love this post.
From your blogging pal down under,
    AA.

      Dear AA,
Thanks for you wonderful comment. I was really impressed with the children, too. They have great accents in french. I have an English accent when I speak french.

Maybe next year we can do a better job at sharing the reading of an entire story.

      From your good friend,

    Hi,

I tried to get Kayliya to read in french, not bad. I wanted to know if epearl is also available to us during the summer? It would be great for her to be able to practice during the summer.

It is really great to see that the kids can read in both languages.

      Dear Dee,

this is AA and I agree with you it is so wonderful to be able to read in a different language.

I can only speak another language wish I did learn how to read and write too in the other language that I know how to speak in.

Have a wonderful summer holiday with Kayliya.
Are you going anywhere during the summer holidays?

      Yours sincerely,
      AA.

      Hi Dee,
I think you will be able to go on ePearl this summer and practice reading the story in french. Please email me during the summer with any questions. There aren’t as many french stories as English but there are some.
      Good Luck and have fun.
      from,
      Mrs. Lynch

      Bonjour Bianca,
Ca va bien? My computer doesn’t have the french accents – there is suppossd to an accent cedille on the c.

      That means “How are you?
If you are good – you say “Ca va, et toi?
      I’m good and you?

      Have a great day, Bianca.
      Bonne Journee!

    Hi AA,

Sorry for late reply. What other language are you able to speak? Just curious.

Kayliya is more focused on English as my French is very basic and most people we know speak English. She finds it really difficult to understand French, which I can relate as someone who is also still learning. I also speak another language to her at home so that does not help her with her French too. I think it is a struggle to learn many languages. I too cannot read or write in my own language having grown up in Canada but I think it would have been nice to know how.

We don’t have plans to travel as Kay’s father is away working the entire summer. I plan to simply go to beaches and parks around here or not too long drives. I usually take the kids to the amusement Park called LaRonde in Montreal. They love it there. Do you have amusement parks in New Zealand too?

Are you able to travel this summer with BB?

      Hi Dee,

Thank you for your wonderful reply back to me I loved reading it.
My other language which I can speak is Italian.
As both my parents are from Italy and been the first born I was given the gift of learning Italian at a very young age.
Then once I went to school english became my second language.
I, do remember getting a bit confussed with english/Italian.

I think it is just wonderful to have Kay home for the school holidays. As a matter of fact Bianca’s school holidays are coming up at the end of this month. However we have only got 2 weeks and then back to school again.

We only planning day trips. For example we plan to visit a place called Healesville Sanctuary where a lot of Australian animals call it there home.

I really loved what you are going to with the children going to the beach and park that sounds just perfect. Then to top it of the amusement park. We have got a local one here but it is only opened during the summer time. As it is very cold here at this given moment because it is winter here. :(

I am not sure if New Zealand have amusement parks because I live in Australia/Melbourne/ Geelong.
So nice to hear from you Dee enjoy your holiday with your children.

      Yours sincerely,
      AA.

        Hi AA,

        Does BB speak Italian too?

Wow, is it really winter there? I never thought about that, I just assumed it was summer over there too. Very interesting. So, is BB’s 2 week break like a midterm break then? When does she officially finish school?

I don’t really know of any animal sanctuary here, but there is a small zoo within driving distance and a “parc safari” where we can drive through the park and see animals walking around outside our car. I’m sure the girls will be completely fascinated with that. I haven’t been there yet, but I would like to take the kids when there dad can join us.

Summer here is usually very hot and humid. Is it the same over there? However, I have to admit this year the weather has been a lot more cooler.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday and make some great memories!

        Dee

          @ Hi Dee,

thank you for taking the time to write back to me.

BB only knows a few words of Italian I have tried to teach her more but no such luck.

BB will be on two weeks holidays as from the 1st of July. I cannot wait as a matter of fact I am counting down the days.
However her big school holiday is in the middle of December. This is when she is not due back at school until early Feb. This is our summer holiday here.

We do get very hot summer’s here but not so much the humdity. We are lucky because living very close to the beach the temperature does cool the night air after a very hot day.

I think taking the girls to the parc safari with you and your husband would be awesome once he gets home. :)
Keep well and have a beautiful summer break with your wonderful children Dee.
          Hope to talk again.

          From a friend down under,
          AA.
