We had a snow day yesterday.  Yeah!  With all the snowstorms all over the U.S. and Canada – this was our first snow day this winter.  The children were so excited to talk about their snow day today and to see the huge mountains in the school’s backyard.  The snow plows come in to clear the parking lot and pile up the snow into huge mountains.

We wrote in our journals this morning.  We use the sounds we know to help us write.  We also use resources around our classroom, like the word wall, to help us, too.  We also have some picture dictionary  pages in our writing folder.  Most of the children can write a message on their own now.  Even though all the spelling is not “perfect” we can still read the message.  Great job boys and girls.

Here are some of our messages….

Colorful and entertaining! It reminds me of Léo’s brother’s first step into writing. We forget quickly because they progress so fast! Keep up the great work and hope for another snowstorm so we can get more interesting stories!!!

      Dear Josee,
Thanks for your great comment. It is amazing how fast the kids can progress once they start using the sounds they know to help them write. These early writings are a treasure.

    Room 102,

I love the picture of the class on top of the snow mountain. How fun!

I love your writing. I can tell you had so much fun on your snow day!

In San Antonio, Texas, it rarely snows. But Friday was a snow day for us, too! I’m looking forward to hearing how my third graders spent their day. I wonder if they had hot chocolate like Lydia and Etienne?

We had less then half an inch of snow, but that is a lot for us!

    Dear Mrs Lynch and students,

wonderful post. How lucky you all are to have a pile of snow to play.

I like your writing is awesome.

If I had a day of playing in the snow I would help my mum make a huge snowman.

    From your pal,
    BB.

      Hi BB,
Thanks for your comment. Making snowmen was very popular a few days ago. We had a bit more snow and it was a bit wet, just perfect for making snowballs. Sometimes the snow is too dry and won’t stick together. I hope you have a fun Valentine weekend.

    Dear Mrs. Lynch and class,
I loved the videos you made of getting dressed for recess and playing outside. It’s hard work getting ready for the snow! I think your sentences are terrific.
In Seattle we only had one snow day and we didn’t get very much snow at all. I love the snow and miss it.
I hope you will visit our blog sometime. We have students of all ages writing on it because it’s a school library blog. We talk about favorite books and things we are learning and doing at school.
    Have a Happy Valentine’s Day!

      Dear Victoria,
It is great to see you visiting our blog. Do you live in Australia? What grade are you in? We are a class of first graders ( 6 and 7 years old). They aren’t commenting yet but I want to teach them how to do it.

    From, Camille, Grade 1

    • teacher102

      Dear Camille,
Thanks so much for visiting our blog and leaving us a message. I bet you can make an awesome snowman. I do like the snow. I love to ski and snowshoe and we have been having a great winter for that this year. I am very impressed that you can leave a comment on a blog. I need to teach my first graders how to do that. Do you have any advice?
      from,

  • Mrs. Hembree

Dear Mrs. Lynch and First Graders,
We are in first grade too! Yesterday we had a snow day too! Some of us made snowmen and snowwomen, some went sledding, some had snowball fights, one of us made an ice sculpture, some had hot chocolate and some of us ate snowflakes! The snow is fun!

Dear Mrs. Olsen’s Grade One and Mrs. Hembree,
It is so nice to meet you. Wow! You had a snow day, too! Aren’t they fun! We are off for a week now. We call it March Break. We had a bit more snow today but not a lot. Was it unusual for you to have snow day in Seattle? I’ve never been to Seattle but hopefully will some day. We really love getting your comments, Mrs. Hembree.
